Dr. Alexandra “Sandy” Harjo-Livingston
Dr. Alexandra “Sandy” Harjo-Livingston is a Two Spirit, nonbinary filmmaker and community advocate of Cherokee and Creek descent. After a distinguished academic career, Sandy transitioned into filmmaking to amplify underrepresented voices through inclusive storytelling.
Sandy holds a Ph.D. in Political Theory and International Relations from the University of Aberdeen, where he was the first UK doctoral candidate to defend a thesis via Skype. He also earned graduate and undergraduate degrees in Counseling Psychology, Philosophy, and Psychology. His teaching career spanned the University of Aberdeen, University of Edinburgh, and Belmont University, covering politics, gender, and postcolonial studies.
As co-founder of Sa’Ke Film Group, Sandy has produced award-winning projects including #EndOverdoseHI: Harm Reduction in the Pacific (2021) and The Sweet Spot, a sketch series showcasing local LGBTQ+ talent on ʻŌlelo Community Media.
Sandy currently serves as Vice Chair of the Hawaiʻi LGBT Legacy Foundation and is a reporter and digital producer for KHON2 News in Honolulu.
